Silver Spring Community Fire Company – Addition

Silver Spring Community Fire Company chose Horst Construction to complete the expansion and renovation of their station house in Mechanicsburg, PA. The two-story addition features a twin apparatus bay, training room, living quarters, office space, and kitchen. Renovations to the existing wing include a watch room, upgraded restroom facilities, as well as additional tool, storage, and work room areas. The completed project provides comfortable facility and a more efficient operation for the entire crew.

Challenges:

  • The fire station was operational 24×7 during the expansion/renovation. This required daily communication to balance construction with the station’s requirement to respond to emergencies.
  • Due to a challenging site with large amounts of rocky soil, Horst and the team developed a comprehensive plan to install the foundation and underground utilities.
  • The project was completed during the winter–inclement weather was a major challenge.
  • Two unique design details include: a slide instead of a fire pole, and a bell tower at the top of the elevator shaft.
